Assign a Permanent IP address to an IQ Base Station

SET THE IQ BASE TO ETHERNET MODE.


Verify the Connection Type

  1. Turn the base station on.
  2. Watch the display on the front of the base station.
  3. If E.C. appears, then the base station is set work with an Ethernet connection. If S.C. appears, the base station is set work with a serial connection.  

Change the Connection Type

  1. Plug the power cord into the base station and into an outlet.
  2. Make sure the base station is turned off.
  3. Press and hold the recessed button next to the power jack on the base station.
  4. Switch the power to on.
  5. The current connection type, the channel, and then six bars will appear in the display.
  6. After 3.5 seconds the connection type will change. Release the button.  
  7. Wait for the number 6 to appear on the display, followed by the connection type and channel.  If these are incorrect, repeat steps 2-7.
  8. Once the connection type and channel are correct, turn the base station off and back on. While doing this watch the display to ensure the connection and channel don't change.

Connect the Base Station to your laptop.

  1. Connect one end of the RJ-45 to the base station. Connect the other end to the adapter and then plug the adapter into the Ethernet jack on your computer. 
  2. Connect the power cord to the base station. Plug the cord into a power outlet, and then flip the power switch to “on”. If the base station is receiving power, the channel will appear in the display.

  3. Make sure the antennae connections are tight and tilt the antennae to 45 degree angles (pointing away from one another) 
  4. The green and yellow lights next to the Ethernet jack will illuminate when the base station is properly connected.


IP Addresses

If the Base station is connected to a network

Contact your IT department for a static IP address for the base station and the subnet mask.

If the base station is connected directly to your computer

Set up and Alternate IP address or, if that is not available then set your computer to use a specific IP address.

  1. Open the Control Panel. (Start menu)
  2. Open Network Connections.
  3. Right-click your Local Area Connection and then click Properties.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the “This connection uses the following items” list and click Internet Protocol.
  5. Click Properties.
  6. Click Use the following IP address
  7. Enter 10.1.1.1 as the IP address
  8. Enter 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Click Close.

Configure the permanent IP address for the base station

Preparation: If you're using Windows 7 or Vista the Telnet program may not have been enabled on your machine. You will need it for step 2 in the "All Versions of Windows" section below. To verify and/or activate this feature click Start / Control Panel / Programs and Features. Select the option to "Turn Windows features on or off". Select the Telnet Client option and click OK. Windows will activate the Telnet program so it may be used in step 2 below.

Windows 7 and Vista

  1. On the Start menu, expand All Programs / Accessories
  2. Right click on the Command Prompt icon
  3. On the popup menu, click "Run as Administrator"

All Versions of Windows

  1. Type arp and press the spacebar type  –s and press the spacebar type the IP address you received from your Network administrator or, if you created an alternate IP address type 10.1.1.5 and press the spacebar (NOTE: this is the IP address of the base station), type the MAC address listed on the bottom of the base station (insert dashes between the sets of two numbers, i.e. 00-20-4a-94-52-6d) and then press Enter 
    (i.e. arp –s 10.1.1.5 00-20-4a-94-52-6d)
  2. Type telnet, press the spacebar, type the base station’s IP address, press the spacebar, type 1 and then press Enter (You will receive a “Could not Connect to Host” message. If the message does not appear within 3 seconds, you typed something incorrectly in the previous steps)
  3. Press the Up Arrow, backspace, delete the 1 and type 9999, Enter
  4. Type 0 (Change Server Configuration) and press Enter
  5. Type the IP address for the base station.  After each number segment (the IP address is separated into segments by the periods) you will see numbers in parentheses. Ignore them.  Press Enter.
  6. If a Gateway IP address was provided to you, type Y, enter the address (again you will see the numbers in parentheses after each segment), and then press Enter three times.

    or,

    If no address was provided enter N then Y then press Enter four times to get past the gateway prompt
  7. Leave the # of bits for the netmask the same.  Just press Enter
  8. Enter N (No) when asked if you wish to change the telent config password
  9. Press 9 (Save and Exit) and then Enter.  You will see a message indicating the connection was lost. 
  10. Press Enter to get out of telnet
  11. Type arp -a and press enter.  Check the table shown on the screen to ensure the IP address of the base is associated with the MAC address of the base
  12. Type ping WW.XX.YY.ZZ where WW.XX.YY.ZZ is the IP address of the base station.  If you don't see "Reply from ..." then OptionPower will not be able to communicate with that base station.  
  13. If you don't see a reply, try turning off the wireless connection on the laptop.  Then try the ping command again.  If still no reply, contact OTI Technical Support.
  14. Close the command prompt window
